Doxycycline, explained by our clinical team
What it is
For inflammatory acne that topical treatment alone cannot control, doxycycline calms the bacteria and the inflammation around clogged pores. Courses are kept as short as possible to limit resistance.
The low-dose 40 mg form treats the bumps and pimples of rosacea without acting as a full antibiotic.
FDA-approved uses
- Severe acne, as an adjunct to other therapy
- Inflammatory lesions of rosacea in adults (Oracea®)
- Various bacterial infections
Our doctors prescribe for approved uses. Any other use is a decision made only by your doctor, for you, after evaluation.
How it is taken
Taken with a full glass of water and not lying down for 30 minutes afterwards. Avoid taking with dairy, antacids or iron, which block absorption.
What to expect
Fewer new breakouts within 4 to 8 weeks. Sun sensitivity, stomach upset and, rarely, esophageal irritation are the main side effects.
Who should not take it
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding and children under 8
- People taking isotretinoin
- Known tetracycline allergy
Questions we hear
How long will I take it?
Usually 3 to 4 months, then a topical maintenance plan.
Why so much sunscreen advice?
Doxycycline makes skin burn much more easily.
Can it be combined with tretinoin?
Yes, that is a common pairing.
