Plain-language guide

Phentermine, explained by our clinical team

What it is

Phentermine has been prescribed for weight loss in the United States since 1959. It reduces appetite by raising noradrenaline activity in the brain, which is why it is a stimulant-type medicine and a controlled substance.

It is intended for short-term use to help start a program, not for years of continuous treatment. Our doctors use it selectively and always with a plan for what comes next.

FDA-approved uses

  • Short-term weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol

Our doctors prescribe for approved uses. Any other use is a decision made only by your doctor, for you, after evaluation.

How it is taken

One dose in the morning or before breakfast. Lomaira® 8 mg can be taken up to three times a day before meals. Avoid late-day doses to protect sleep.

What to expect

Reduced appetite and more energy, often with a faster heartbeat, dry mouth, restlessness or insomnia. Blood pressure is checked before and during treatment.

Who should not take it

  • Heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure or overactive thyroid
  • Glaucoma
  • History of drug misuse
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Use within 14 days of an MAO inhibitor

Questions we hear

Why is it short-term only?

The approval is for a few weeks because longer studies were not part of the original label and tolerance can develop.

Is it addictive?

It is related to amphetamine and has misuse potential, which is why it is Schedule IV.

Can it be combined with a GLP-1?

Combinations are an individual medical decision made by your doctor.
