Ramelteon, explained by our clinical team
What it is
Ramelteon works on the same receptors as the body's own melatonin, nudging the sleep-wake cycle rather than sedating the brain. It is the only sleep medicine with no abuse potential and no next-day hangover in most people.
It is best for people who lie awake at bedtime rather than those who wake too early.
FDA-approved uses
- Insomnia with difficulty falling asleep
Our doctors prescribe for approved uses. Any other use is a decision made only by your doctor, for you, after evaluation.
How it is taken
One tablet within 30 minutes of bedtime, not with or right after a high-fat meal.
What to expect
Shorter time to fall asleep, usually within the first week; dizziness, fatigue and headache are the main side effects.
Who should not take it
- Use with fluvoxamine
- Severe liver impairment
- Severe sleep apnea

It targets the same receptors but is far more potent and precisely dosed.
Is it habit-forming?
