Moving to the U.S. means learning a new health system. Here are the basics that help most.

Doctors are licensed by state

A doctor licensed in Florida cannot automatically treat you in Massachusetts. For telehealth, the doctor must be licensed where you are during the visit.

Prescriptions go through pharmacies

In the U.S., prescription medicines are dispensed by licensed pharmacies. Buying prescription medicine without a prescription, or from sellers abroad, can be unsafe and illegal.

Ask for language support

You have the right to understand your care. Ask if a Portuguese-speaking team member or interpreter is available. At EKO Labs our team speaks English and Portuguese.

Bring your history

If you had exams or treatments in Brazil, bring the results and a list of medicines. Brand names are often different in the U.S., so the active ingredient name helps.

Red flags

  • Anyone selling prescription medicine without a doctor visit
  • "Research use only" products sold for people
  • Pressure to pay before any conversation with a professional
