Bupropion SR, explained by our clinical team
What it is
Bupropion reduces nicotine craving and withdrawal irritability by acting on dopamine and noradrenaline. It is a non-nicotine, non-controlled option that also treats depression, which often travels with smoking.
It is the same molecule found in Contrave®, so our doctors check for overlaps before prescribing.
FDA-approved uses
- Aid to smoking cessation
- Major depressive disorder
Our doctors prescribe for approved uses. Any other use is a decision made only by your doctor, for you, after evaluation.
How it is taken
One tablet daily for three days, then one twice daily at least eight hours apart, starting one to two weeks before the quit date, for 7 to 12 weeks.
What to expect
Less craving and irritability; dry mouth, insomnia and headache are the common side effects. Seizure risk rises with higher doses or certain conditions.
Who should not take it
- Seizure disorders, eating disorders or abrupt withdrawal from alcohol or sedatives
- MAO inhibitors within 14 days
- Anyone already taking another bupropion product
