Flibanserin is a prescription medicine. It is not right for everyone: drinking alcohol within two hours before or after the dose (or at all, depending on amount); liver impairment; taking strong CYP3A4 inhibitors such as some antifungals and antibiotics. Tell your doctor about every condition you have and every medicine and supplement you take.
Common side effects are described below. Stop and seek care for any severe or unexpected reaction. This page is education, not medical advice; your doctor and pharmacist give the instructions for your treatment.

Flibanserin, explained by our clinical team
What it is
Flibanserin is a daily, non-hormonal tablet that acts on serotonin and dopamine signaling in the brain to rebalance sexual desire. It is the oral alternative to the as-needed injection bremelanotide.
Because alcohol with flibanserin can cause severe low blood pressure and fainting, there are strict rules about drinking, which our doctors go over before prescribing.
FDA-approved uses
- Hypoactive sexual desire disorder in premenopausal women
Our doctors prescribe for approved uses. Any other use is a decision made only by your doctor, for you, after evaluation.
How it is taken
One tablet at bedtime every night. If no improvement is seen after eight weeks, treatment is stopped.
What to expect
A gradual increase in desire over weeks. Dizziness, sleepiness, nausea and dry mouth are common; taking it at bedtime limits them.
Who should not take it
- Drinking alcohol within two hours before or after the dose (or at all, depending on amount)
- Liver impairment
- Taking strong CYP3A4 inhibitors such as some antifungals and antibiotics
Questions we hear
Can I drink at all?
Small amounts are allowed only with a gap of at least two hours before the bedtime dose; your doctor will explain the current label rules.
How is it different from Vyleesi®?
Addyi® is a daily tablet; Vyleesi® is an injection taken before sexual activity.
Does it work after menopause?
It is approved for premenopausal women only.
