Rimegepant, explained by our clinical team
What it is
Rimegepant is a fast-dissolving tablet that blocks CGRP. Taken at onset it stops attacks; taken every other day it reduces how many attacks happen.
For people with frequent migraines who want one medicine that does both jobs, it simplifies treatment considerably.
FDA-approved uses
- Acute treatment of migraine with or without aura
- Preventive treatment of episodic migraine
Our doctors prescribe for approved uses. Any other use is a decision made only by your doctor, for you, after evaluation.
How it is taken
Place one tablet on or under the tongue; it dissolves without water. Acute: one dose per 24 hours. Prevention: one dose every other day.
What to expect
Pain relief within two hours for attacks, and fewer migraine days per month with preventive use. Nausea and stomach pain are the main side effects.
Who should not take it
- Use with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors or strong P-gp inhibitors
- Severe liver impairment
- End-stage kidney disease
Questions we hear
Can I use it for both at once?
Yes — the every-other-day schedule still allows an acute dose on the off days as directed.
Is it better than Ubrelvy®?
They are similar for attacks; Nurtec® adds the prevention indication.
Does it cause rebound headache?
No evidence of medication-overuse headache so far.
