Rizatriptan, explained by our clinical team
What it is
Rizatriptan is a fast-acting triptan with an orally disintegrating tablet that melts on the tongue — useful when swallowing is hard or water is not at hand.
In comparisons it tends to work slightly faster than sumatriptan tablets, so it is a frequent second choice when the first triptan is too slow.
FDA-approved uses
- Acute migraine with or without aura (adults and children 6+)
Our doctors prescribe for approved uses. Any other use is a decision made only by your doctor, for you, after evaluation.
How it is taken
One dose at onset; a second dose may be taken after two hours if needed, up to the daily limit. People taking propranolol use a lower dose.
What to expect
Pain relief within one to two hours; dizziness, drowsiness, tingling and dry mouth are the usual side effects.
Who should not take it
- Coronary artery disease or prior stroke
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure
- Use within 24 hours of another triptan or an ergot
- MAO inhibitors within two weeks
